River Gambia

For those who want to discover the real “Gambian” life

Join us for the two-day excursion for the real adventurers! The tour starts early with a pick-up at the hotel. We drive through small villages and past rice fields and get a good impression of authentic Gambia. The first stop is in Jara soma, a transit point for people and goods, where we will eat a local breakfast. Along the way we visit the “Stone Circles”, one of the UNESCO Heritage Sites of Gambia. Here a local guide tells you more about the mysterious Stone Circles. Before we go on the boat, we have lunch in Janjanbureh. Once on the boat, accompanied by an experienced captain and a ranger, we will take a beautiful boat trip through River Gambia National Park and spot chimpanzees, hippos and various species of birds.

We take a small city tour through Georgetown, where you visit the local population and the slave houses, and spend the night in an attractive lodge on the river. In the evening you will dine at the camp in a typical African ambiance. During a delicious breakfast we can enjoy the beautiful view and the sunrise. We start the return journey to the hotel via another beautiful rural route.

If you haven't been to Georgetown then you haven't seen Gambia!

For a wonderful relaxing day

This lovely lazy day starts at the Denton Bridge, where we will board a real African piroque. Today we sail all day on the Gambian River while the crew takes good care of you. Enjoy the delicious food that’s  made fresh on board. On the upper deck, you can relax on one of the mattresses and/or deckchairs. Enjoy the sun and the nature! Look out over the mangroves and spot several beautiful birds, catch your own fish or take a refreshing dip. All-in all, a very relaxing day on the Gambia River.

Visit the most fun nature park in Gambia and have your future predicted

You will be picked up in the morning  for a trip to the Makasutu Reserve, located on a tributary of the river Gambia. You will find many birdspecies, three species of monkeys and pygmy deer. Upon arrival tea, coffee or lemonade is offered. Experience the silence of nature during a canoe trip along the mangrove forests. During a walk trough the jungle you will meet one of the oldest Maribou’s (medicine man) in the Gambia. Let him read your palm and predict the future. Then we visit a palmwine farmer. He will demonstrate how to climb a palm tree. Back at the camp, a delicious lunch is served. Taste and enjoy typical Gambian dishes in the backdrop of the jungle. After lunch you  can meet the potters, woodcarvers and furnituremakers who will share their knowledge.

An opportunity to step back in time!

After an early departure from the hotel, we take the ferry from Banjul to Barra – an experience on its own. In Barra, an open jeep will be waiting to take us on a scenic rural route to the village of Juffureh. The story of Kunta Kinteh is beautifully told in the book and film ROOTS by Alex Haley. The “Flag of Freedom” was raised at the moment slavery was abolished. You will also meet the village chief and visit the slavery museum, where the history is revealed step by step. On Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly known as St. James Island, we will explore the ruins of the fort and receive an explanation of the history of slavery.

Another country & other impressions

This is the perfect day to discover Senegal. In the morning we leave for the ferry  from Banjul to Bara on the north bank. This is an experience in itself, enjoy a true spectacle of vans and cars carrying all sorts of things to transport. On the other side, we continue our journey to Senegal. Wait at the border and wonder yourself about the slow pace. After crossing the border we drive to Fathala Park. We make a two hour trip through the park. Here we can encounter animals, no longer seen in the Gambia, such as zebra’s, rhinos and giraffes. Perhaps even the western giant eland. In Fathala you get an impression of the west African jungle it once was.

Do not forget your pasport, visa and vaccination record!  Yello fever vaccination is obigated.

Meet the locals! Discover the real Gambia and its friendly people

Don't miss the south of The Gambia. With a jeep or a 4x4 car with air conditioning, this interesting tour goes to the south of the country to get to know southern Gambia and its inhabitants. First stop is Kachikally, the sacred crocodile pool. This location is used to perform fertility rituals.

We then visit the Serekunda market. A gigantic market, where you can buy anything, from clothing to mobile phones, spices and other food. We continue our way to Abuko livestock market, where there is a lot of trading, especially goats and sheep. The Fulani are real cattle traders. After the market we go to Paradise beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Gambia. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean, order a fresh lobster or fresh fish, but a local dish with chicken, meat or fish is of course also possible. Lunch is not included.

The final stop and a highlight of the tour is the fishing village of Tanji. At the end of the day the boats come in and it is a true spectacle. You will see that daily life is completely devoted to fishing. Tanji is the largest fishing port in Gambia and important for exports to Senegal, among others.

A full, versatile day that you should not miss.
