River Gambia

21 November 2019

Ideal as a first introduction to the Gambia

Get a good first impression of The Gambia. Come along to the lively Serrekunda market and experience the bustle in and around this colorful market, as the locals do their shopping here. In addition to fish, fruit, goats, homemade peanut butter, you will also find mobile phones and televisions here. Together we walk through a maze of streets with a variety of stalls. During this trip we will also visit a Batik factory, where beautiful colored cloths are made.

To end the day you can stroll around the “Arts & Craft market” in Bakau.

“Katchikally” is the mecca for souvenir hunters. Buy a beautiful wood carving, a djembe or one of the other typical Gambian souvenirs.

The opportunity to go for a step back in time

From Banjul the trip begins whit a two hours relaxing trip over the rivier.

A drink is served on board. We go ashore at Juffreh, the island of

“the Flag of Freedom” and Kunt Kinthe. The srory of Kunt Kinthe is beautifully told in the book ROOTS. The “Flag of Freedom” is placed when we were freed from slavery. In the museum we will discover the story step by step. During the trip to St. James Island, if we are lucky,  we see some dolphins  swimming in the riviver. On the island we will visit the ruins of the fort and learn more about the history of slavery

Another country & other impressions

This is the perfect day to discover Senegal. In the morning we leave for the ferry  from Banjul to Bara on the north bank. This is an experience in itself, enjoy a true spectacle of vans and cars carrying all sorts of things to transport. On the other side, we continue our journey to Senegal. Wait at the border and wonder yourself about the slow pace. After crossing the border we drive to Fathala Park. We make a two hour trip through the park. Here we can encounter animals, no longer seen in the Gambia, such as zebra’s, rhinos and giraffes. Perhaps even the western giant eland. In Fathala you get an impression of the west African jungle it once was.

Do not forget your pasport, visa and vaccination record!  Yello fever vaccination is obigated.

Meet the locals! Discover the real Gambia and its friendly people in a truck

Don't miss the south of The Gambia. With a jeep or a 4x4 car with air conditioning, this interesting tour goes to the south of the country to get to know southern Gambia and its inhabitants. First stop is Kachikally the sacred crocodile pool. This location is used to perform fertility rituals.
We then visit the Serekunda market. A gigantic market, where you can buy anything, from clothing to mobile phones, spices and other food. We continue our way to Abuko livestock market, where there is a lot of trading, especially goats and sheep. The Fulani are real cattle traders. After the market we go to Paradise beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Gambia. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean, order a fresh lobster or fresh fish, but a local dish with chicken, meat or fish is of course also possible. Lunch is not included.
The final stop and a highlight of the tour is the fishing village of Tanji. At the end of the day the boats come in and it is a true spectacle. You will see that daily life is completely devoted to fishing. Tanji is the largest fishing port in Gambia and important for exports to Senegal, among others.
A full, versatile day that you should not miss.

You can notice that there is al lot of experince, he know many people so there is often extras to added to the excursion. It seems as if he feels wat people wanted.
