An opportunity to step back in time!

After an early departure from the hotel, we take the ferry from Banjul to Barra – an experience on its own. In Barra, an open jeep will be waiting to take us on a scenic rural route to the village of Juffureh. The story of Kunta Kinteh is beautifully told in the book and film ROOTS by Alex Haley. The “Flag of Freedom” was raised at the moment slavery was abolished. You will also meet the village chief and visit the slavery museum, where the history is revealed step by step. On Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly known as St. James Island, we will explore the ruins of the fort and receive an explanation of the history of slavery.

Another country & other impressions

This is the perfect day to discover Senegal. In the morning we leave for the ferry  from Banjul to Bara on the north bank. This is an experience in itself, enjoy a true spectacle of vans and cars carrying all sorts of things to transport. On the other side, we continue our journey to Senegal. Wait at the border and wonder yourself about the slow pace. After crossing the border we drive to Fathala Park. We make a two hour trip through the park. Here we can encounter animals, no longer seen in the Gambia, such as zebra’s, rhinos and giraffes. Perhaps even the western giant eland. In Fathala you get an impression of the west African jungle it once was.

Do not forget your pasport, visa and vaccination record!  Yello fever vaccination is obigated.

Meet the locals! Discover the real Gambia and its friendly people

Don't miss the south of The Gambia. With a jeep or a 4x4 car with air conditioning, this interesting tour goes to the south of the country to get to know southern Gambia and its inhabitants. First stop is Kachikally, the sacred crocodile pool. This location is used to perform fertility rituals.

We then visit the Serekunda market. A gigantic market, where you can buy anything, from clothing to mobile phones, spices and other food. We continue our way to Abuko livestock market, where there is a lot of trading, especially goats and sheep. The Fulani are real cattle traders. After the market we go to Paradise beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Gambia. Take a refreshing dip in the ocean, order a fresh lobster or fresh fish, but a local dish with chicken, meat or fish is of course also possible. Lunch is not included.

The final stop and a highlight of the tour is the fishing village of Tanji. At the end of the day the boats come in and it is a true spectacle. You will see that daily life is completely devoted to fishing. Tanji is the largest fishing port in Gambia and important for exports to Senegal, among others.

A full, versatile day that you should not miss.

We booked the Georgetown excursion (2 days) with River Gambia Tours and nothing has been said too much in the other reviews. Everything is well arranged and you feel completely safe with the wonderful guide Aladin. The drive there is long, but he tells you all about the country along the way and you make regular stops. The trip across the river is truly breathtaking, so beautiful. The overnight stay is primitive but also a great experience, especially breakfast the next morning with the monkeys around you, great!

In addition to this excursion, we also went with him on foot to the Crocodile Farm in Bakau and that was so much fun, after all, you don’t touch a crocodile every day :).

Aladin is entertaining, cheerful, neat and keeps his appointments. We highly recommend River Gambia Tours! Good luck Aladin and Tine!
