4-day Gambia heritage tour
From Roots and the history of The Gambia to local villages, wildlife and life along the river
Travel beyond the coast on a four-day private journey through The Gambia, combining history, local villages, wildlife and life along the River Gambia.
Day 1 – North Bank, Albreda, Juffureh & Roots
We leave the coast and cross the Gambia River by ferry to the North Bank. From there we continue to Albreda and Juffureh. Here we explore the story of Alex Haley’s Roots and an important part of Gambian and West African history. There is plenty of time to visit the historic places, villages and surrounding area.
Overnight at Roots Camp.
Day 2 – Farafenni, local villages & Wassu Stone Circles
After breakfast we continue into the interior. Along the way we pass through Farafenni, a lively trading and transit town. The journey itself is part of the experience: we pass local villages and make stops at markets and other interesting places. We then visit the impressive Wassu Stone Circles, one of The Gambia’s best-known historical and archaeological sites, before continuing to Janjanbureh, formerly Georgetown.
Day 3 – Janjanbureh, river, wildlife & local communities
Today is one of the highlights of the journey, as we explore Janjanbureh, the River Gambia and the wildlife and communities that make this region so special. We visit historic places and learn about the special history of this old settlement, including its past and the development of the region along the River Gambia. Slavery history is part of the story, but it is not the only focus of the day.
A major highlight is the boat trip on the Gambia River towards the Baboon Islands area. With local guidance we look for chimpanzees, hippos, monkeys and many bird species. We also visit Fulani and other local settlements along the river, learning about traditions, ways of life and everyday life in the interior.
Day 4 – Jarra Soma & return to the coast
After breakfast we begin the return journey to the coast. This day is also part of the experience. We stop in Jarra Soma, a lively transit town and an important hub in this part of The Gambia. Where possible, we also stop at local villages, markets or other interesting places before continuing to the coastal hotel.
