Roots & Kunta Kinteh Island – A Journey into Gambia’s Past

Visit Juffureh, Albreda and Kunta Kinteh Island and discover the story behind ROOTS, Kunta Kinteh and the history of slavery that made these places known around the world. You are picked up early from your accommodation and driven to the ferry in Banjul. After crossing to Barra, you continue by open jeep towards Albreda and Juffureh, travelling through villages and landscapes of the North Bank.

Juffureh, Albreda & ROOTS

In Juffureh and Albreda you discover the story of Kunta Kinteh, known worldwide through Alex Haley’s book Roots and its famous film and television adaptations.

You visit historic places and learn more about the transatlantic slave trade, life in these villages and the significance of Kunta Kinteh in Gambian history.

Slavery Museum & Flag of Freedom

During the tour you visit the slavery museum and learn more about the history of Albreda and Juffureh.

You also visit the Flag of Freedom, a historic site commemorating the abolition of slavery and those who regained their freedom.

Kunta Kinteh Island – UNESCO World Heritage

From Albreda you travel by boat to Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly known as James Island. On the island you explore the historic ruins and learn about the role this location played in the transatlantic slave trade.

Kunta Kinteh Island and related historic sites are part of the UNESCO World Heritage property Kunta Kinteh Island and Related Sites.

SEE WHAT YOU WANT!

If you want to make an excursion in The Gambia, I can recommend the following.

Tour guide Aladin, from River Gambia Tours is the best thing that can happen to you in The Gambia. I dare say that, because I travel a lot and therefore have a lot of comparison material.

Why at Alladin?

– He speaks good English
– He quickly understands where your needs lie
– He has humor and is always cheerful
– He’s reliable
– In consultation with him, and after hearing his advice, you can put together your trip yourself (“cherry picking”)
– He makes a competitive offer after you have made your choices, without any surprises or extra costs afterwards
– In addition to Alladin, you also travel on your excursion with a good driver in a reliable car
– You decide for each part of the trip how long / short you want to stay with each part. You do not have to adapt to a large composite group as with the other providers, you are completely flexible
– Alladin keeps any overly obtrusive providers of stuff away from you kindly but urgently, because his sense of responsibility towards his customers is great
– You can choose from all the sights in The Gambia, such as (appointment of all excursions), and also spread this over several days if the wish list becomes too long.

An additional advantage to do your excursion at Alladin is that the money you pay goes to the local population instead of a large travel company.

Lots of fun!
