Lamin Lodge & Daranka – Mangroves, Oysters & Silk Cotton Tree

Enjoy a peaceful boat trip through the mangroves around Lamin Lodge, where birdlife, traditional oyster harvesting and local culture come together.

Lamin Lodge & the mangroves

From Lamin Lodge you cruise through peaceful mangroves, enjoying the distinctive landscape and the many bird species that live in the area.

Traditional oyster harvesting

In the mangroves you see how oysters grow on mangrove roots. Local women traditionally collect them from canoes. This work is an important source of income for many women and offers a special view of everyday life in The Gambia.

Daranka & the Silk Cotton Tree

From Lamin Lodge we travel by boat to Daranka to visit the impressive Silk Cotton Tree.

This centuries-old tree still plays an important role in traditional rituals and local customs. Its enormous hollow trunk is so impressive that you can actually step inside – a remarkable place where nature, culture and local tradition meet.

Multi-day Tours

We booked the Georgetown excursion (2 days) with River Gambia Tours and nothing has been said too much in the other reviews. Everything is well arranged and you feel completely safe with the wonderful guide Aladin. The drive there is long, but he tells you all about the country along the way and you make regular stops. The trip across the river is truly breathtaking, so beautiful. The overnight stay is primitive but also a great experience, especially breakfast the next morning with the monkeys around you, great!

In addition to this excursion, we also went with him on foot to the Crocodile Farm in Bakau and that was so much fun, after all, you don’t touch a crocodile every day :).

Aladin is entertaining, cheerful, neat and keeps his appointments. We highly recommend River Gambia Tours! Good luck Aladin and Tine!
